Land of the Serendip:
Art of the Written Word

Klaserie Game Reserve, South Africa

February, May, October, November of 2017-2019

10 Days / 9 Nights

An experience like no other. Awe-inspiring landscape, wildlife and culture. Come to Africa and capture it with writing, and photography.

Klaserie Nature Reserve

See. Experience. Capture.

We will call the Klaserie our home for the duration of our trip. Covering an impressive 60,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, established in 1972 as part of the greater Kruger National Park, is one of the largest privately owned reserves in South Africa. As a non-government organization, it is involved in the full spectrum of nature conservation.

This area has been referred to as the “Land of the Serendip” meaning “the art of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought after.” This is the essence of this bit of Eden. You’ll be captivated as you experience all its wonder. And we’ll help you bring the experience back home in your photographs, and the written word.

During your stay, in addition to game drives, you’ll have daily opportunities for group and individual instruction and guidance to practice and improve your photography skills; be inspired to write; and bring both together for publication or just for yourself.

You will be accompanied by Dick Berry (Visionary Teacher and Professional Photographer), Deb Coman (Writer, Editor and Coach), and Shaun Taylor (Field Guide).

You’ll leave any stress, monotony, and commonalities of everyday life behind as you embark on this journey of a lifetime.

Day 1

Welcome to South Africa

Upon arrival at O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, S.A., a Capture Africa Tours representative will meet and transfer you to the SleepEezy Bed & Breakfast Cottages for a comfortable overnight stay.

1 Night Lodging at SleepEezy Bed & Breakfast Cottages.

Day 2

Klaserie Nature Reserve

After breakfast our group will depart for the Klaserie Nature Reserve. We’ll arrive at Kitara Lodge after a full day’s drive stopping for lunch along the way. Upon arrival at the lodge, we’ll have a brief orientation and welcome to the beauty, comfort and splendor of Nzumba Lodge, our home for the remainder of the trip.

You’ll have time to unpack and settle in before a delicious welcome dinner, prepared by our very own private gourmet chef.

Days 3, 4, 5 and 6

Game Drives, Landscape and Wildlife

This is why you’re here: to experience this incredible land up close with guides who have long-term, personal relationships with this magical place.

We’ll have daily game drives that include a combination of early morning, evening and night excursions, as well as some full-day outings. Our unique, private lodge and onsite guides and vehicles will allow for impromptu outings in response to a lion’s roar off in the distance as well as scheduled game drives based on the cycles of animal life in this land.

In addition to our seasoned guides, you’ll be accompanied by photography, and writing experts to offer individual and group guidance and instruction, both out in the field and back at our beautiful home base where we’ll provide space and materials to enhance your photography, and writing expression.

Each day will offer game drives, creative expression and time to relax and soak in the experience in the comfort and splendor of Nzumba Lodge, where we’ll have our own private gourmet chef to prepare all of our meals and meet any special dietary needs.

Evenings and times not in the wild, can be spent relaxing by the pool, private rooms, or around the fire pit, reflecting on the day’s adventures.

Day 7

Elephant Whispers Excursion

Today we have something very special planned. We’ll spend the day with the world’s largest land animal: the awe-inspiring elephant. Elephant Whispers is a conservation sanctuary for a herd of rescued African elephants.

Situated in the Sandford Conservancy on the banks of the Sabie River in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, Elephant Whispers offers an Elephant Experience of a lifetime which will leave you with a renewed respect and admiration for these gentle giants of Africa.

We’ll help take care of six rescued elephants from their morning brushing, through their daily interaction and riding activities. You’ll be up close with these gentle giants touching their skin, ears, tails, and their tusks. We’ll assist with recording behavior and feeding habits while they free range feed in the bush. You will have the chance to learn about the animals themselves as well as help support this important animal protection organization.

Days 8 through 9

More Game Drives, Photography, and Writing

We’ll continue with our daily game drives, experiencing more opportunities with this beautiful land of magnificent trees, brush, skies and wildlife. With access to such a broad range of the Klaserie, we may encounter lions, leopards, hyenas, zebras and a multitude of birds.

This is why you come to Africa and so it remains the focus of all our activity during our stay. Game drives, while always available daily, are optional for those who may occasionally choose to remain in the beautiful setting of Kitara Lodge and enjoy the privacy and comforts of this family-owned setting.

Dick, Shawn, and Deb will be available to you at all times throughout your stay to assist in any way, answer questions and provide individual time with regard to the land, animals, photography, writing and journaling to create and document your experience professionally or just for yourself.

Our aim is to enhance an already outstanding journey of a lifetime by offering more ways for you to capture the experience so that it lives beyond our wonderful time together.
