Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, we will brief you and take you through the safari plan for the coming week.
Following an hour and a half drive from Arusha we will be in the midst of Tarangire National Park. This unique park has a magical, prehistoric atmosphere, and is perhaps Tanzania’s best-kept secret.
It is the epitome of the safari experience, with its sweeping savannah lands, lush swamps and clusters of ancient baobab trees, covering 1,030 square miles. It is home to a an excellent, dense population of wildlife – over 95 mammal species and 500 bird species, concentrated around the permanent waters of the Tarangire River during the heat of the day.
During the day Dick will help each participant with all photographic related questions, critique images, and offer suggestions for capturing better images in the field. Following the days game drives he will review your photos of the day and to discuss new techniques to work on for the coming days.
After enjoying the days game drives, you will return to your hotel, Tarangire Sopa Lodge where you will be staying for 2 days.

Lake Manyara National Park
Packing a picnic lunch, we set off early for Lake Manyara National Park. Ernest Hemingway called this area “the loveliest place I have seen in Africa”. The lake is highly alkaline and home to a high number of fish, which attracts over 380 species of birds, including pelicans, flamingos, ducks, geese, waders, herons, kingfishers, marabou and other stork species, larks, hornbills, swallows, and doves.
The highlight of the park’s wildlife is the wonderful hippo population. Elephant, giraffe, monkeys, and impala are also to be found, and it is home to the highest density of baboons in Africa. We will keep an eye out for the famous tree-climbing lions, and a fantastic variety of butterflies.
We will spend our afternoon vising the Tewa’s house for a cultural tour. Following we will drive to Tloma Lodge for dinner and overnight.
1 Night at Tloma Lodge
Ngorongoro Crater / Empakaai Crater
Late afternoon, we will head up to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. While in Ngorongoro, we will have the opportunity to visit the Ol Doinyo Lengai (an active volcano mountain) and the Empakaai Crater, which is smaller than the Ngorongoro crater. The area is famous for it’s pink flamingos.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is an extensive highland area along the eastern arm of the Rift Valley. The NCA was established to conserve wildlife and other natural resources. We will have the unique experience of seeing Maasai herdsmen whose cattle graze side by side with the tremendous variety of wildlife found in the area. Apart from its wildlife riches, the NCA is also of great archaeological importance, with the remains of some of mankind’s earliest ancestors discovered in the area. The largest intact caldera in the world, the Ngorongoro Crater shelters one of the most beautiful wildlife havens anywhere. A permanent population of more than 30,000 animals inhabit 100 square miles in the 2000 ft. deep crater, making this one of the few places in Africa where guests stand a great chance of seeing the entire Big Five in the course of a single game drive.
2 Nights at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge
Serengeti National Park (Northern Serengeti)
After 2 exciting days in NCA, we head out to the north of Serengeti National Park, close to the Kenyan border, to witness the Great Migration. This is one of nature’s greatest events where nearly 2 million wildebeest make the long journey from the Mara River down to the central /western plains of Serengeti. It’s a great place to find the big cats as they come in search of their annual feasting.
With 14,500 sq kms, the Serengeti Plain is undoubtedly the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and the greatest concentration of plains game anywhere. Serengeti is renown for its black-maned lion and other predators including wild dog, spotted hyena, jackal, cheetah and leopard. The wealth of birdlife is of a special interest including colorful rollers, bee-eaters, kingfishers and sunbirds and a large number of birds of prey.
For the two days, we’ll head out on an all day game drives to explore northern Serengeti, with a picnic lunch somewhere under a shady acacia tree. The early morning and late afternoon light on the golden grasses create the most amazing light for photography.

In the next three days, we will be having early game drives to explore the central and south Serengeti, often with picnic lunch somewhere under a shady acacia tree. The early morning and late afternoon light on the golden grasses create the most amazing light for photography.
