The wildebeest is also called a gnu and there are two species of wildebeest.
.
The black wildebeest or white tailed gnu, and the blue wildebeest or bridled gnu.
.
So which wildebeest is this you are looking at…it’s the blue wildebeest and the most abundant in east Africa.
.
In the Maasai Mara there is a non-migratory population of these blue wildebeest.
.
In 1977 this group had almost 120,000 and in 1997 the population was around 22,000.
.
This huge decline is due to the increasing competition between cattle and wildebeest for diminishing land, agricultural practices, and less rainfall.
.
There wasn’t much attention given to this wonderful animal on World Wildlife Day.
.
Lets give a BIG shout out to the all the gnu’s that remain in Africa.
.
Without them all the iconic prey species would not be doing very well…they are all connected and dependent on each other.

Thr Grey crowned crane goes under about eleven different names.
.
This bird is actually the national bird of Uganda.
.
They are absolutely beautiful birds to see in person and have a wingspan of over 6.5 feet and weigh almost 8 lbs.
.
They are shy so getting close to them and seeing the intricate detail on their heads requires binoculars or a telephoto lens.
.
The detail of their head and body plumage is incredible.
.
Next time your out on safari keep your binoculars ready and camera set up to capture these birds.
